ABOUT US:

SkilldLabs is a product built from the challenges of our past. Hiring quality talent, working together in the same time-zone, and building cutting edge products at warp speed. We help startups overcome today’s hiring challenges. Today, we have grown into a leading staff augmentation provider of highly skilled teams of nearshore experts.

Our client is redefining social connection with real-time, voice-based engagement. Their mission is to empower people to share meaningful moments and “hypes” during life’s biggest events. Imagine getting a voice message from someone who cares about you, playing over your music, just when you need it most. We’re building a new dimension of social interaction where everyone can feel truly connected, without the noise of likes and follows. The app is currently used most often by charity marathon runners and the people supporting them as they train. We’ve also had people use the app during addiction recovery, hospice, and other life challenges. They are a remote-only, early-stage startup with a global team of 30 people and  two co-founders in the U.S. Both our Android and iOS apps were originally built in 2019 by a solid agency partner. Over the years, the Android app has been updated periodically by different developers. Our Android stack uses Kotlin and SQLite. We have not implemented Jetpack Compose yet.

ROLE OVERVIEW:

We’re looking for an innovative, product-focused Android Developer with a strong emphasis on delivering an exceptional user experience (most important of this role) to join our dynamic team and help bring this project to life.  Ideal candidates will have experience working at a startup, working on consumer apps (bonus points for games), and mentoring junior developers. As an Android Developer, you’ll play a key role in building and optimizing our pre-product market fit Android app, which focuses on real-time, voice-driven engagement. You’ll collaborate closely with our design, product, and backend teams to create a seamless, user-friendly experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design, build, and maintain advanced features for our Android application.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, and ship new features.
  • Ensure the performance, quality, and responsiveness of the application.
  • Work on bug fixing and improving application performance.
  • Continuously discover, evaluate, and implement new technologies to maximize development efficiency.
  • Optimize app performance, including voice message delivery, real-time notifications, and music overlays.
  • Participate in the entire app lifecycle, including concept, design, test, release, and support.

Our immediate goals for this role include:

  1. Finish the execution of a rebrand we did over the summer, which includes some superficial changes like font, color, and button updates as well as some redesigns of existing features
  2. Implement two new features related to user onboarding
  3. Mentor one junior developer

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Proven experience as an Android Developer with a focus on pre-product market fit applications.
  • Proficiency in Kotlin and/or Java, with a strong understanding of Android SDK.
  • Experience with real-time data streaming, notifications, or voice messaging systems.
  • Familiarity with RESTful APIs to connect Android applications to backend services.
  • Strong understanding of mobile UI/UX best practices and principles.
  • Experience with third-party libraries and APIs, particularly for audio and real-time messaging.
  • Knowledge of modern Android architecture components such as ViewModel, LiveData, Room, and WorkManager.
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
  • Understanding of Google’s Android design principles and interface guidelines.
  • Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git).

NICE TO HAVE:

  • Experience with audio processing, music overlays, or similar audio-based applications.
  • Familiarity with Android Jetpack Compose.
  • Knowledge of push notification services (e.g., Firebase Cloud Messaging).
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies.
  • Familiarity with A/B testing and app analytics tools.
