How each model works
SkilldLabs
- We maintain a curated network of 3,000+ pre-vetted engineers, and run a five-gate screen against your specific role on top of that.
- Five gates, run by people: identity and cross-reference check, English written and spoken, a review of work actually shipped, a technical screen by a senior engineer in the same stack, and reference calls we place ourselves.
- Between 5% and 10% of applicants finish all five gates. The process is published in full, including what disqualifies a candidate.
- Latin America only, so every engineer works US business hours.
- 75% of the engineers we have placed are approaching the 18-month mark with their team.
- Payroll, benefits and local compliance handled. No upfront payment, no minimum contract, no exclusivity.
- If the fit is wrong we replace at no additional cost, typically within 5 to 10 business days.

Freelance engagement, or a full-time team member
The two operations optimise for different shapes of work. Toptal matches a specialist to a scoped piece of work quickly, with the freedom to end it. We place someone who joins your standups, learns your codebase and stays.
That shows up in the economics. Toptal does not publish rates; third-party reviews report roughly $200–$500+ per hour. We quote 49–54% below equivalent US salary for full-time work. Over six weeks of specialist work and over a year of full-time work, those two structures produce very different totals.
Scope differs too. Toptal covers designers, finance experts and project managers alongside engineers. We cover software engineering, QA, product design and cloud.
On risk: Toptal runs a two-week no-risk trial where you do not pay if you cancel. We do not run a trial; we replace a wrong fit at no cost, typically within 5–10 business days, with no minimum contract.
“Travis and his team are competent, highly qualified, and extremely professional. If you’re looking to fill a missing capability in your team, take a look at SkilldLabs.”

Which is cheaper?
For full-time, long-running work the structures differ substantially. Toptal does not publish rates and third-party reviews report roughly $200–$500+ per hour; we quote 49–54% below equivalent US salary. For a short specialist engagement the comparison is much closer.
Can I hire a designer through SkilldLabs?
We place product designers alongside engineering. Toptal covers a wider set of non-engineering disciplines including finance and project management.
Do your engineers work as contractors or employees?
They work full time on your team, with payroll, benefits and local compliance handled by us. You do not need a legal entity in their country.
Do you offer a trial?
We do not run a trial period. We replace a wrong fit at no cost, typically within 5–10 business days, and there is no minimum contract.
Want the engineers who finish?
Tell us the role and we will show you who cleared all five gates. No upfront payment, and if the fit is wrong we replace them at no cost.
